3. ONDREJ SMEYKAL
Friday, 28th of March: 7pm – 10pm

A one-man Didgeridoo orchestra is perhaps the best way of describing the extraordinary music of phenomenal Didgeridoo player Ondrej Smeykal . His highly original style of play is the result of a life completely devoted to his instrument. For well over a decade and with ever increasing intensity, Ondrej has been developing and redefining his own unique approach to the Didgeridoo. His predominant use of unusually long Didges and “extensions” of up to 4 metres in length, enable him to play incredibly deep tones and to produce a much wider range of sounds and overtones than are possible on regular didgeridoos. Each composition, or song, as he refers to it, is very different in style, ranging from break-beat and organic Didgeridoo techno, to trance, ambient and anywhere in between.

Towards the end of the seminar people will be given the opportunity to try an instrument with Jeremy’s guidance and there will be Q and A. People of all ages are welcome. The duration of the seminar is usually around an hour.

5. JEREMY CLOAKE YIDAKI WORKSHOPS
Saturday, 5th of April (Introductory Class) 11am – 4pm
Sunday, 6th of April (Advanced Class) 11am – 4pm

Introductory Class
If you have ever felt that the Yolngu playing techniques from North East Arnhem Land  are too difficult to manage, then this is the workshop for you! In this workshop Jeremy breaks these playing styles down into simple and easily learned individual sounds. During the workshop these sounds are practised and refined with many distinctions made regarding tongue position and movement, pressure control and use of the voice. Then they are put together into phrases that are repeated to become rhythms. Jeremy has been teaching this workshop internationally since 2001 and to this day still continues to refine his teaching methods and the content of his workshops. He is a professionally trained teacher and takes pride in delivering accurate and relevant information that is delivered in a straightforward way. This workshop is usually between 3 and 4 hours depending on the size of the group.

Advanced Class
This workshop continues on further with information from the introductory yidaki workshop, so it is necessary to have done it first. The phrases learnt in the introductory workshop are practised and refined then developed. Many different phrases are taught in a way which simplifies their complexity. Participants of this workshop will gain an excellent understanding on the principles of yidaki playing, together with composition skills and playing dexterity. Jeremy has been teaching this workshop internationally since 2001 and to this day still continues to refine his teaching methods and the content of his workshops. He is a professionally trained teacher and takes pride in delivering accurate and relevant information that is delivered in a straightforward way. This workshop is usually around 3 hours, depending on the size of the group.

Didgeridoo Breath visits the crew at SGIO

Posted: Thursday, September 13, 2012 in Didge Workshops

We here at Didgeridoo Breath think that Craig from SGIO is a pretty cool guy.

Craig is from SGIO insurance and he contacted us saying that he was conducting some team building exercises for the staff at SGIO, and was curious whether Didgeridoo Breath could help him. We thought that this was such a good idea for a workforce, learning didge and music skills with a bunch of people that you work with is pretty cool (we get to do it everyday 🙂 ) So We got Elliot, one of our experienced didge instructors, filled his awesome van full of didgeridoos and sent him over to meet the team at SGIO.

Overall there were 30 SGIO Staff members that attended the 1 hr didgeridoo lesson.

We had so much fun visiting the staff at SGIO, there was an abundance of laughter throughout the team- building exercises and we were soooo happy that by the end of the lesson, all of the staff members were all playing as a group, a lot we’re pulling off some really cool sounds, but most of all that everyone enjoyed it and got something out of it.

This is the feedback we received from Craig, who organised the lesson with us.

“We all had a fantastic time, the session was well structured, informative and a lot of fun. I will certainly be recommending you guys to our other Business Departments.”

Benefits of Didgeridoo for Sleep

Posted: Thursday, August 2, 2012 in Info & Education

What is Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a chronic disorder in which one repeatedly stops breathing during the night. These events last 10 seconds or longer, and may occur hundreds of times per night. Someone with sleep apnea may experience loud snoring, brief pauses in breathing, and intermittent gasping. During apnea events, the oxygen level of the blood drops, the heart rate increases, and sleep becomes disrupted as the affected person wakes up to resume breathing. This can have significant consequences on one’s health.

Sub-Types of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a generic term that includes any disorder that causes pauses in breathing during sleep. It may affect someone at any age, but the prevalence of sleep apnea peaks at middle age. There are a few major sub-types, including:

Sleep apnea is not the only problem that can lead to difficulties breathing during sleep. There are a few other problems that do not cause a complete pause in the breathing but may still be problematic, such as:

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Aside from the pauses in breathing which are typical of the disorder, there are many other common symptoms in sleep apnea. These symptoms may include:

  • Loud, chronic snoring
  • Choking or gasping during sleep
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Morning headache
  • Memory or learning problems
  • Feeling irritable

Can Didgeridoo help in the treatment of Sleep Apnea?

Yes!!!!!

Sleep apnea is a common disorder that causes pausing during breathing while the afflicted person is asleep. This is often due to the upper airway collapsing, and it can lead to major medical problems. It is most often treated by Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or CPAP, but this is not always tolerated. In fact, compliance is a major hurdle in treatment that sometimes cannot be overcome. One proposed alternative to CPAP is learning to play an aboriginal instrument called the didgeridoo

Regular playing of a didgeridoo reduces daytime sleepiness and snoring in people with moderate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and also improves the sleep quality of partners. We at Didgeridoo Breath have personal experience with numbers of customers and partners personally reporting to us, the positive impact didgeridoo playing has had in their lives, sleep and relationships!

Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome are common sleep disorders caused by the collapse of the upper airways. Regular didgeridoo playing reduces snoring and daytime sleepiness, finds a study published by the British Medical Journal.

‘In one person, the apnoea-hypopnoea index decreased from 17 to 2’… ‘In conclusion, didgeridoo playing improved daytime sleepiness in patients with moderate snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea and reduced sleep disturbance in their partners. Larger trials are needed to confirm our preliminary findings, but our results may give hope to the many people with moderate obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome and snoring, as well as to their partners.’ British Medical Journal
